Sailing Away - Boy Birthday Card

Here's a card that I made a while ago for a little boy's birthday. I'm not sure if there's a name for this type of card or not. The main 'panel' of the card is just a piece of cardstock embellished with patterned paper and ribbon. The part of the card that actually opens measures  3.5 x 3.75" and its back is adhered to the larger panel.

Here's a peek inside - excuse my hand - I had no way to hold the card open! The sentiment is Birthday Wish from the last page (Under $10 page) of the current catalog - but I got mine for free with last month's promotion!

I had so much fun making this card, I think you'll be seeing some more of these! I used a bit of retired Haiku patterned paper and some Tangerine Tango ribbon. Threw in Pacific Point and So Saffron cardstock for a summery feel. The non-functional hinges were punched from the large & small oval punches, with a brad for good measure - use strong adhesive when adhering these to the little card!

I used Life's a Breeze stamp set (#113504). If you don't have this, you could easily reproduce this look with the sailboat from the current Nursery Neccessities set (#113506). For a little interest, I stamped the boat twice in two different colors. I then cut the sail out and popped it up on a dimensional on the main stamped panel. Little touches like this add a lot to a card. (ETA: my original post mistakenly stated that Life's a Breeze was retired - but it's not! How'd I miss this favorite set in the catty?)

Speaking of retiring stamp sets, Stampin' Up! will be releasing it's list of retiring stamps on June 1, so stay tuned!

Masculine Top Note Box

There's something about the Top Note die that just seems feminine to me - maybe it's graceful curves or something. Anyway, after making so many Top Note Die Boxes and writing a tutorial, I was wondering if it would be possible to make a masculine-looking box from the Top Note die. Rather than use patterned paper, I decided to give it a try with chipboard. I used the Long Board (#114320)from the On Board Book Basics group. This sturdy chipboard is sized perfectly to fit through the Big Shot!

 

I stamped on the die-cut chipboard with Chocolate Chip, Always Artichoke and Old Olive inks, and sponged the edges with Always Artichoke. I'm really pleased with how it came out, and I don't think it looks feminine at all! This is perfect for Father's Day - use it to present a gift card, cuff links, money clip or any small gift! This could easily be adapted for the graduate with a change of stamp set & accessories.

Masculine Card Class

Are you looking for a card making class in northern New Jersey? This is it! A card making, rubber stamping class in my Pine Brook, NJ home (that's in Morris County). In this "Cards for Him" class, we'll make 5 cards for the men in our lives. Masculine cards can often be difficult to make - not at this class! There will be an evening session and a morning session for this class: Thursday, June 4 from 7:30-9:30 PM or Friday, June 5 from 9:30-11:30 AM. Class fee of $20 includes 5 cards, envelopes and technique instruction.

Some of the techniques that we'll be using include: dry embossing, heat embossing, die cutting, 2 step stamping, paper piecing and watercoloring. Lots of fun techniques to try, so don't miss out! Scrapbooking Myth #1

Since May is National Scrapbooking Month, I've decided to revisit some of the scrapbooking myths that I've debunked in my newsletters. Today's "myth" comes from my July 2008 newsletter:

"I have piles & piles of pictures and I don't know where to start."

Guess what? You don't have to go in any particular order! If you feel like you have to start at the beginning of time, you're setting yourself up for a monumental task and you'll end up suffering from 'analysis paralysis'.

Scrap what 'speaks' to you - maybe start with your most recent batch of pictures and create a couple of fun pages. With Stampin' Up!'s scrapbook albums, it's easy to reorder your pages at any time.

So pull out a few recent pictures and get busy!
